CONDITIONING OILS
ROSEMARY OIL is distilled from the herb Rosemary, the herb you use on pork roasts. It is supposed to remove tangles and make your hair more manageable. I bought a small vial of the stuff—it’s inexpensive—and tried it. It’s touted as a daily grooming aid, but when I uncapped it, the smell rushed out and knocked me back! It’s extremely odiferous; kinda like Sulfur 8 hairdressing—everyone will know you’re using it. It didn’t help remove tangles all that much either. It also has alcohol in it, which can be drying. If you try it and you feel it helps, fine, but I’d only recommend using it as a pre-shampoo treatment only.
COCONUT OIL is rather rich and usually fragrant, although I’ve purchased pure coconut oil form an herbal pharmacy and it didn’t have much of a frangrance. If you’re on vacation in Mexico, the Caribbean or most beach resorts, local vendors often hawk coconut oil for a couple of dollars. Instead of frying your skin with it, buy some and use it for an inexpensive, natural hot oil hair treatment right there on the beach.
JOJOBA OIL is the wonder oil that’s very popular to put in hair care products. It’s supposed to be a good skin moisturizer. I haven’t tried it on my face but it seems to work okay on my hair. For as much as it costs—I paid almost five dollars for two ounces—it didn’t do as much as I thought it was going to do. One manufacturer even recommends using it as an aftershave … What the heck, if you’ve got the bucks, most health food stores have the jojoba.
OLIVE OIL, in my experience, is the most reasonable oil to use for conditioning. You can buy it at the supermarket, so it’s easy to get. It costs about three or four dollars for a 25 ounce bottle. You don’t need to use expensive virgin olive oil; plain, everyday olive oil will do.
CASTOR OIL is used in a lot of hairdressings marketed to men. It did an adequate job lubricating the ends of my hair, but I found castor oil to be kind of sticky and difficult to shampoo out. It also made my scalp flake.
